From time to time, our regulatory body (The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario) releases new policies and position statements regarding how Registered Massage Therapists conduct their practice. On September 29th, 2016, the CMTO released a new Conflict of Interest guide for registrants which put a limit on some aspects of our practice. I had wanted to take an opportunity to outline the new guide and how it will affect you.
The guide defines a Conflict of Interest asa situation where the registrant's (RMT) professional judgement is compromised which impairs their ability to act in the best interest of the client. This could include entering a personal relationship (other than the therapeutic relationship) or if either the therapist or the client receive financial benefit from the transaction.
Being registered with the CMTO means that I (and all other RMTs in Ontario) need to be compliant with the regulations that are set forth.
So, how does that affect you as the client?
One of the main points outlined in the article outlined referrals for profit. Under this new guide, if there is a bonus for referrals to a massage therapist either financial (giving money, gift certificates, discounts) or non-financial (gifts) are now prohibited.
After researching business, it is considered proper etiquette to show appreciation for referrals. I started giving gift cards to clients whenever I had a referral to me because I really do appreciate when you send your friends and family to me and I want to show my gratitude. However, that now goes against this new policy. Therefore, I have to change to remain compliant with the new policy.
I am currently researching ways that I can show my appreciation to you for people you send my way that remains compliant with this guideline and I will keep you updated when I find something suitable.
