FAQ: What Type Of Product Do You Use For Massage?

As an RMT I get asked this question a lot by not only my clients, but also my family and friends. Over the past few years, I have used a few different products before I landed on the one that I use currently. And while there are a lot of factors involved, it ultimately comes down to a personal preference for either the therapist or the client.

Lotions/Creams: when I first started as an RMT this is what I was trained to use initially as it was provided by the college I attended. It is light weight and doesn't leave the skin feeling greasy, yet helps to keep the skin moisturized. I decided to try something else as I noticed I was constantly having to reapply on my client's skin, and (in my opinion), taking away from the relaxation experience as there was a minor disturbance in the flow of the techniques. Gels: after my experience with lotions, I tried using a gel as some of my colleagues were using it. I found it very beneficial. Gels are heavier than lotions and are designed to stay on the skin longer and providing a very smooth glide for neuromuscular techniques. Because it doesn't absorb quickly and sits on the skin longer, gels do sometimes have that greasy sensation, so I started wiping off the excess off. It also became very messy when transferring the gel to my massage bottle. Oils: I started using essential oils during my treatments as I was learning about the benefits of them. However I was finding that I was having a difficult time using the gel as a carrier for the essential oils. I decided to make the switch to oils during my treatments. Not only does the oil provide an easy base to mix the essential oils with, but they are also very light on the skin, provide a nice glide and they are easier to transfer. Since I don't need to apply a large amount, over time I found the oil to be the most cost effective product to use for my treatments.

The oil that I am currently using is Bon Vital's Therapeutic Touch Massage Oil. It combines olive oil with Arnica extract (helps to decrease pain and swelling), jojoba, sesame and grapeseed oils. This allows for a smooth glide as well as nourishing the skin with vitamin E and antioxidants. Since it is water soluble, it doesn't leave the skin feeling greasy and it's easy to clean up. Additionally it is free of nuts, PARABENs and scents. *please note that this is not endorsed by this company, this is simply my personal preference for my treatments.

What about you, do you have a preference for massage products? I'd love to heat your thoughts!

Thank you for taking the time to read this article and I hope you have a great day!
